AKANKSHA DISTRICT COMMITTEE (Guidelines)

All the wives of the District Magistrates and the Commissioners of U.P.

Subject: Policies and Guidelines for District Akanksha Samities. Akanksha U.P. was formed in 1887 by Mrs. Shyamala Kalyan Krishnan wife of Chief secretory,U.P. She also started “District Akanksha Samities” in all the districts of U.P. to monitor the development schemes specially those for women & childrens. For many years.District Akanksha did tremendous work in the districts but slowly it failed out.Now,once again as President Akanksha U.P. I want to revive “District Akanksha Samities” and I want them to play an active part to uplift the lives of women and childrens in their districts.

Structure of the District Akanksha Samiti DM’s wife will be the president of Akanksha Samiti in the District. Other officer’s wives and civil society ladies will be the members of Akankasha Samiti.It can have any amount of members.

Akanksha Samiti is already a registered society in the district; nobody has to register it again. If DM’s wife is not there then Commissioner’s wife or COD’s wife can be the president of Akanksha. Commissor's wife will be the divisional head of Akanksha Samities of the districts of the division. She will hold meetings of all the DM’s wives of her division to guide and motivate them and monitor their work after every one or two months.

The District Akanksha Samities will look after the development schemes in the entire district and not limit themselves to one village.

Area of work

1. Security Awareness Workshops for Women and Girls:
a. Educating them about Women Power Line 1090 and Website on Crime against Women and many other schemes of the government for their protection.
b. Imparting Training in Martial Arts for Self Defense.
c. Informing Girls and Women about the new laws for women safety established post the “Nirbhaya” incident.
d. Counseling of Victims to help them lead normal lives.
e. Providing Information and details about the Domestic Violence Act, If necessary inform Mahila Ayog also.

2. Women Healthcare:
a. To give information about healthcare of women, specially pregnant ladies and child care, and Government Schemes such as “Janani Suraksha Yogna”, Anti Tetanus vaccination of Women, information of ambulance 102 for institutional deliveries etc.

3. Helping Handicapped Women’s & Girls:
a. Distributing wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids and other appliances for the handicapped.
b. Organizing free computer training to handicapped girls.

4. Skill Development Workshops:
a. Teaching womens and girls life skills like stitching, basket weaving, candle making etc.
b. Helping women organize self employment groups like Masala Mathri Kendra of Akanksha U.P

5. Literacy of Women & Girls:
a. To motivate women for adult literacy programmers.
b. To encourage parents to send girl children to school for education.

6. Supervision of Children’s Homes:
a. To visit homes in the District.
b. Help and Monitor children’s food, clothes, and books and attend to health related problems of the childrens.

7. Visit to Anganwadi Kendra’s:
a. Akanksha Members to visit Anganvadi Kendra’s to check the implementation of nutrition programmers.
b. To guide the women about the problems of malnutrition of childrens.

8. Visit to Government Schools:
a. To check the availability of teachers, books, quality of mid day meals. Lights, Fans etc.

9. To Organize Health camps for Women & Childrens:
a. Vaccination of childrens, organizing health camps and eye camps for women and distributing medicines etc.

10. Overseeing Implementation of Window Pension Schemes.

11. To look after Orphanages of Women-“NirashsritMahila Ashram”.

12. Promoting Handicrafts and Artisans of the District:
a. You can inform the handicrafts committee of Akanksha U.P. about all the handicrafts of your district and do activities to promote them and help the artisans.

13. Monitoring Implementation of Schemes in Lohiya Gram.

14. To organize campaigns against Female Foeticide.

15. To organize construction of Women Toilets in Villages.

16. To monitor all the Govt. Schemes for the welfare of Women and Childrens in all the villages of the District.
